Glenn was Renee Geyer, Marcia Hines and most things R&B. He would copy new music he had come across onto a tape, as he was sure I would like it. He was usually right.
I remember when we were primary school age and Glenn would have been in high school, he would help us build cubby houses in the bush across from Nana and Pop’s place. Such fun.
When I was little, I always believed what he said, so it was no surprise when I willingly gave him my dolls high chair along with one of my cloth dolls to put on top of the bonfire on Guy Fawkes night. He told me I could have them back when they were finished with it. Seeing Glenn and his friends putting crackers in the doll’s backside before putting it on top of the bonfire should have tipped me off that I wasn’t going to be seeing that doll again.
When Glenn moved to Melbourne, we would sometimes go and stay with him. He took us to our first restaurant to have such exotic food as prawn toast and honeyed prawns. It felt so sophisticated to say we had been to the Canton for dinner.
Once we were old enough to go to concerts on our own, Glenn would get the phone call asking if we could stay, and often with friends in tow. The answer was always yes. Dropping four excited teenage girls to see Duran Duran at The Palais and picking us up afterwards, could not have been the most fun for him, but he did it anyway.
A group of us travelled to Melbourne for yet another concert, and Glenn suggested we come to a party he was going to, once the concert was over. I can remember we had to climb through the huge window of some type warehouse on King St to get inside. That was quite the party to behold for a bunch of country kids.
Glenn and I went to Bali for a holiday in the early 80’s. Lots of drinking, dancing and fun. Because we were only 7 years a part in age, it was hard to convince our fellow party goers that he was, in fact, my uncle. We did survive the “Arak Attack” party at the resort but needed to catch a taxi back to our accommodation. The poor taxi driver having to listen to us drunkenly belting out “Waltzing Matilda” repeatedly like a couple of bogans until we reached our destination. Never did touch the local booze again.
Glenn always kept track of where all of his nieces and nephews were, what important things were happening in our worlds, the names of all of the new additions to the family and loved seeing our photos.
When I think of Glenn, I’ll always remember music, parties and dancing.Hi I have only found out that my dear friend Glenn from 1980 to 1995 died last year.
